Today I finally figured out where the horrible smell and rats are coming from

I live in New York City, the rat capitol of the world, so an odd rat or two is to be expected. But recently my apartment has been filled with lots and lots of rats.

I keep a clean apartment, so there is no reason for so many rats. My landlord has also sent an exterminator who has been able to catch a few, but they keep coming and coming. This has been going on for a few months.

In the past few weeks, the air in my apartment has also developed a putrid smell that, up until now, neither myself or my landlord could figure out where it was coming from.

Well, today I figured out where the smell and the rats were coming from: my nextdoor neighbor's apartment!

My neighbor was always quiet, in fact I think in the three years I lived here I maybe saw him twice. Well, that's likely because he was a hoarder to an extreme degree.

The paramedics just left his apartment, where they found him dead, crushed under a pile of old newspapers. His rotting corpse is the source of the putrid smell I've been smelling for the past week or so. Poor guy didn't have very many friends or family, so no one missed him up until now. I guess his sister couldn't get in contact with him for a while so she called the city, who found the corpse.

As for the rats, well my neighbor's apartment, which is filled almost to the ceiling with old newspapers, old food, clothing and more is their nest. I peeked my head in and it was disgusting. I don't know how anyone could have lived like that.

The landlord says that he will have to completely gut the apartment before anyone else can move in. The stench has seeped into the drywall. Hopefully though this will solve the stench and rat problems I have been dealing with.

Goodbye neighbor, I hardly knew ye.
