Entitled Karen mistakes my act of kindness for me working here.

Yesterday I was out shopping at a home improvement store when I had an encounter with a wild Karen. For this story it's important to know that I'm a tall guy, around 6' 5", so I can easily reach things on the top shelf.

As I was shopping I saw an elderly gentleman shopping with his wife. There were plastic gas cans on a high shelf and he could not reach them. Me, being a nice and tall person offered to grab one for them. They accepted and were grateful for my assistance.

Seeing this act of kindness, Karen automatically assumes that I'm an employee. You see, above the gas cans was where the store kept their generators. They were having a special and promoting the gas cans along with the generators. Karen wants a generator, so she comes up to me and says "Can you please get me one of the generators?". The fact that she said "please" made me at first think she was a nice, reasonable person.

So, when I said, "I'm sorry, I don't work here." I expected her to understand that. Instead, this is when she went full Karen.

"What do you mean you don't work here?" she cried. "I saw you grab that gas can for that other gentleman!".

I said, "Well maam, I was just helping him since he couldn't reach and as you can see I'm rather tall. I can't help you get a generator though, you would need an employee to fetch that from the top shelf.".

"But you are an employee!", Karen screamed. Her patience was clearly gone at this point and she wasn't thinking straight. At this point I have had enough.

In my best but stern customer service voice I said, "I do not work here, I'm sorry I cannot help you.". I began to walk off when I feel myself being pulled backwards. Karen had tried to grab me and spin me back around towards her, but me being a giant and her being a 5' 9" woman, all that happened was my shirt got tugged a bit.

At this point though, I'm getting angry and I yell, "What the hell is wrong with you!". At this point, a manager arrives and asks what is going on.

Karen screams, "This employee won't get me a generator!". The manager looks at me, clearly not in the store's uniform and says to the Karen, "He doesn't work here maam.".

At this point, Karen starts screaming at the manager, which I take as my cue to get the heck out of there. I finish up my shopping and I don't see Karen again. Hopefully I never will.
