Okay, I really need some outside opinions on this because I feel like I’m taking crazy pills here. My coworker, let’s call her Sarah, is making my life at work a living nightmare over something totally minor. And my boss is actually listening to her!
Sarah is… a lot. She’s one of those people who thinks every little thing they own is a precious artifact. It’s always ‘my special pen,’ ‘my special stapler,’ ‘my special brand of tea that no one else can touch.’ Honestly, it’s exhausting. We work in a shared office space, open plan, so things are naturally a bit fluid, you know? But she acts like she has her own private bubble and everything within a five-foot radius is sacred.
Her biggest thing is this coffee mug. It’s nothing special, just a regular white ceramic mug, but she goes on and on about how her grandma gave it to her and how it’s her ‘lucky mug’ and she can’t start her day without it. She even has a little routine where she cleans it herself at the end of the day, even though we have a dishwasher. Like, okay, good for you, but don’t expect everyone else to tiptoe around your personal shrine.
So, the problem started yesterday. I was having a super busy morning, trying to finish up a big report that was due by lunch. My keyboard was getting a bit sticky and dusty, you know how it is. Just from normal use. I wanted to give it a quick wipe down, but I needed a bit of water and a cloth. I looked around for a small container, maybe a spare cup or something. And what do I see? Sarah’s ‘precious’ mug, sitting right on the edge of the communal table, practically in my workspace. Not on her desk, mind you, but where everyone puts their stuff. It had obviously been there since the morning because she was already on her second cup of coffee, using one of the company mugs. So, her ‘lucky’ mug was just sitting there, abandoned.
I figured, hey, it’s a cup. It’s not like I’m going to damage it. I just needed to put a tiny bit of water in it, dip my cloth, and wipe down my keyboard. Which is exactly what I did. I cleaned my keyboard, the water got a little murky from the dust and crumbs, but it was just water and a bit of grime. Totally harmless. I rinsed it out quickly under the tap, dried it with a paper towel, and put it back exactly where I found it. I honestly didn’t think twice about it. It took maybe 30 seconds out of my morning.
Well, apparently, this was an act of war. A few hours later, I hear this shriek from Sarah’s desk. She’s holding the mug, practically shaking. “WHO USED MY MUG?!” she yells, loud enough for half the office to hear. I look over, confused. My boss even came over to see what the commotion was. Sarah then starts going on about how she found ‘residue’ in her mug and how it smelled like ‘old electronics’ and how someone ‘defiled’ her grandma’s mug. Seriously. Defiled. It’s a ceramic cup!
I calmly explained that I had used it earlier to clean my keyboard because it was the only small container available and it was just sitting there. I told her I rinsed it and dried it. I didn’t see the big deal. But she just kept escalating. She said I had ‘no right’ to touch her things, that I should have asked, that I was ‘disrespecting her property.’ I told her it was on a communal table, not her private desk, and it looked like any other abandoned cup. How was I supposed to know it was her ‘special’ one when she wasn’t even using it?
The boss actually pulled me aside afterwards. He said I should have been more ‘considerate’ and that it was ‘unprofessional’ to use someone else’s personal items without asking. He even implied I should apologize! Apologize for what? For using a mug that was just sitting there, empty and unused, to clean my keyboard? It’s not like I broke it or stole it. I cleaned it! If she’s so precious about it, maybe she should keep it on her actual desk or, I don’t know, wash it herself thoroughly when she’s done. Or better yet, don’t leave it lying around where anyone could mistake it for a communal item.
Now Sarah won’t even look at me. She’s been giving me the cold shoulder all day, and honestly, it’s making the atmosphere in the office super awkward. I feel like she’s blowing this way out of proportion. It was a cup, I used it, I cleaned it. End of story. I don’t think I did anything wrong. She’s the one making a scene and being completely unreasonable over a bit of keyboard dust.
Am I The Jerk here? Or is Sarah just incredibly oversensitive and dramatic about her ‘lucky’ mug? I need someone to tell me I’m not crazy because everyone here is acting like I committed some kind of terrible crime. I was just trying to get my work done!
