I have a problem with my neighbor, Mr. Henderson, and I am needing some perspective if I am the jerk here. It is a long story but I will try to explain it clearly.
I live in my house for five years now. It is a nice house, not big, but cozy. My garden is also small, just enough for some vegetables and a small patio. Next to my house is Mr. Henderson’s house. He has a very large garden, very fancy, with many flowers and big bushes. He spends much time there, always working, always pruning. I mind my own business, usually.
Between our properties, there is a wooden fence. It is an old fence, I think it was there when the houses were built many years ago. It is a good fence, solid. On Mr. Henderson’s side, he has many climbing plants. One of them is a very big rose bush. It is beautiful, yes, with red flowers. But this rose bush, it grows very much. It grows over the fence, onto my side. Not just a little bit, no, it was many branches. It was like a green wall on my side of the fence.
For a long time, I did not say anything. I am not one for confrontation. But this rose bush, it started to cause problems for me. The leaves would fall onto my patio, many of them. And the flowers, they would also drop petals, making a big mess. When it rained, the wet leaves would stick everywhere. Also, the thorns! It was very difficult to walk near that part of the fence without getting scratched. My small dog, he sometimes tried to go there, and I was always worried he would get hurt by the thorns. I have to clean it up every day. It was much work for me, and it was on my side of the fence.
One time, I tried to talk to Mr. Henderson. I said, “Excuse me, your rose bush, it is growing very much on my side. It is making much mess.” He just smiled and said, “Oh, it is just a bit of nature, isn’t it lovely?” He did not seem to understand my concern. He loves his plants very much, I know this. But this was my space. My property.
After that, nothing changed. The rose bush continued to grow. More leaves, more petals, more thorns on my side. I waited for many months. I thought maybe he would see the problem himself, or maybe prune it. But no. He only pruned the parts on his side, to make it look nice for him. The parts on my side, he ignored them. They just kept growing and growing.
So, last week, I decided I must take action myself. It was my property. The branches were on my land, on my side of the fence. I read online that if something is on your property, you can remove it. So, I bought new pruning shears. They were good ones, very sharp. I went outside and I carefully, very carefully, started to prune the rose bush. I cut all the branches that were growing over the fence line, back to the fence. I put all the cuttings into a bag. It was a big bag. I thought I was doing a good job, making my garden neat and safe again.
I was nearly finished when Mr. Henderson came out to his garden. He saw me. His face, it became very red. He shouted, “What are you doing? My rose! My beautiful rose!”
I said, “Mr. Henderson, I told you it was growing too much on my side. It was making a mess. It is my property here.”
He came very close to the fence. He was pointing at the cut branches. “You have destroyed it! You have killed my plant! This is vandalism!”
I was very surprised. “Destroyed? No, I just cut the parts that were on my side. The main plant is still there, on your side. It will grow back, I am sure.”
But he did not listen. He was very angry. He said he would call the police. He said I had no right. I tried to explain again that it was on my side, and I have a right to manage my property. But he just kept shouting. He called me names, not bad names but angry names, like “thoughtless” and “disrespectful.”
The next day, he put up a new, taller plastic fence just behind the old wooden one, on his side. It looks very ugly now, this plastic fence, from my garden. And he has not spoken to me since. He just glares.
I truly believe I was in my right. It was causing me problems, and he ignored my polite request. The branches were on my property. I did not go into his garden. I did not touch the main plant. I just cut what was on my side. Now he acts like I am some kind of criminal.
Am I The Jerk? Was I wrong to trim the rose bush that was growing over onto my property when my neighbor refused to address the issue? Please, tell me your honest thoughts. Maybe I am missing something, but from my side, I was just trying to keep my garden clean and safe.
