So, I really need to know if I’m losing my mind here or if my kid is just being completely unreasonable. I’m gonna lay it all out and you tell me the truth becuase my head is spinning and I just cant even beleive this is happening.
My son, ‘Leo’, is 19. He’s a good kid generally, works a part-time job at a coffee shop, and he’s been saving up for what he calls his “dream guitar.” Now, this isnt just any guitar. This is some vintage, rare, super expensive electric guitar that he’s been obsessed with since he was like 15. He had pictures of it everywhere, on his phone, in his room, I even saw him looking at it on the computer at christmas one year. He’s been putting away every single penny from his job, from birthday money, from any chore money I’ve given him over the years that he hasn’t spent on junk food. He even skipped going to prom so he could put that money into his guitar fund. Its been years of this. Years. He has like, almost six thousand dollars saved up. Six thousand dollars for a guitar. Can you imagine?
Now, I know what some of you are thinking, ‘that’s his money!’ and ‘he worked hard for it!’. And yes, he did. But let’s be realistic here. Who paid for his food for 19 years? Who paid the rent? Who bought him clothes, paid for his education, drove him everywhere before he got his license? Me. I did. All of it. So while it’s ‘his’ money, a big chunk of it is really just money that exists in the household because I provided the stability for him to earn and save it in the first place. Right?
Anyway, my car. My car is my livelihood. I drive for a living, delivering packages all over the city. Without my car, I have no job. No job means no income. No income means no house, no food, no nothing. My car started making this terrible noise last week. Took it to the mechanic, and they said the transmission was basically shot. Needed a whole new one. The cost? Five thousand dollars. Five thousand. I just don’t have that kind of money just sitting around. I live paycheck to paycheck, like most people these days. I looked everywhere, tried to get a loan, but my credit isn’t exactly stellar after a few tough years. I was panicking. Utterly panicking.
Then I remembered Leo’s savings. He keeps it in a separate savings account, but I have access to it because I helped him set it up when he first started working, and it’s linked to our main bank account for transfers and stuff. I knew he was close to his goal. Really close. But I also knew he’d eventually make that money back. He’s young, he has his whole life ahead of him. Me? My job was on the line now. My ability to pay for everything was on the line. I thought about it for a day, two days even. I tried to find other options. There weren’t any. So, I transferred five thousand dollars from his savings account into my checking account. I paid the mechanic. My car is fixed, I’m back at work, everything is fine. Problem solved.
Or so I thought. He checked his account yesterday. Must have been getting ready to buy this stupid guitar or something. He came storming into the living room, screaming at the top of his lungs. “WHERE’S MY MONEY?!” he yelled. “YOU STOLE MY MONEY!” Stole? STOLE?! I told him calmly that I had to borrow it for the car. That it was an emergency. That he could just save up again. He looked at me like I was some kind of monster. He called me a betrayer, a thief, a terrible parent. He said I ruined his life’s dream. His life’s dream! It’s a guitar, for goodness sake! He literally screamed that he hated me and ran out of the house. He’s staying at a friend’s place now and won’t answer my calls or texts.
My own mother, when I told her, said I should have talked to him first. That I shouldn’t have touched his money. But what was I supposed to do? Let us go homeless? Let my car break down and lose my job? It was an emergency! A real, actual emergency that affected our entire family’s stability. His guitar, while important to him, is a luxury item. My car is a necessity. I needed it to keep a roof over our heads. It’s not like I spent it on something frivolous. I spent it on something vital. I told him I’d pay him back when I could, even though I don’t honestly know when that will be. But I will. Eventually. He’s being so dramatic about this whole thing, like I personally took food out of his mouth when I actually saved our ability to get food.
I feel like I did what I had to do. It was a tough decision, but it was the right one for the family. He’s 19, he can rebuild his savings. He’s not a child anymore, he needs to understand that sometimes adults have to make hard choices for the greater good. Am I The Jerk? Tell me I’m not the jerk. Please, someone tell me I did the right thing here. He’s acting like I ended the world.
