Am I the Jerk for selling my husband’s “investment” action figures to help with our finances?

So me and my husband, we been together for a while now. He’s a good guy most of the time, I guess. But he’s got this one thing that always gets on my nerves, and it’s these, like, action figures. Not like the little kid ones you play with, but those special ones, you know? The ones that are still in the box and everything, and he keeps ’em all over his office, and some even spill into the living room sometimes. He calls ’em his “collection.”

Now, I don’t get it. They’re just plastic dolls, basically. He never takes ’em out of the box, just cleans the dust off ’em and looks at ’em. He spends a lot of money on ’em too. I mean, a lot. Like, hundreds of dollars for one little plastic guy in a box. It always felt like such a waste to me. We could use that money for, you know, important stuff. Bills, groceries, maybe a new couch that doesn’t have that weird stain from when our cat got sick. But nope, it all goes to Captain Whatever or Princess Who-cares.

I tried to talk to him about it before. I told him, “Honey, do we really need another one of those? They’re taking over.” He’d just get all defensive, saying it was his hobby, his passion, that they were investments. Investments! Like a plastic toy is gonna pay our mortgage. He said some of ’em were worth a lot of money. I always just kinda rolled my eyes ’cause how much could a toy really be worth?

Anyway, things have been a little tight lately. My job cut my hours, and his job ain’t exactly paying us enough for two people and all his toys. I looked at those shelves full of boxes, and it hit me. He said they were “investments,” right? Well, it was time to cash in some of those investments. For the good of the family. For us. I figured he’d understand, deep down.

He was going away for a weekend with his buddies, like he does every few months. A “man-cation” he calls it. Gives him a chance to do his guy stuff, gives me a chance to get some peace and quiet. This time, though, it gave me an opportunity. I went into his office, which is usually locked, but I know where he keeps the spare key. I know, I know, he thinks it’s a private space, but we’re married, what’s private? What’s mine is his, and what’s his is mine, right?

I looked at all the boxes. There were hundreds. I couldn’t sell them all, that would be too much. But I picked out the ones that looked the fanciest, the biggest boxes, the ones he always talked about, like the “limited edition” ones. I figured those would be the “investments” he was talking about. I carefully put them in some moving boxes I had in the garage. There were maybe twenty or so of the bigger, special ones. I looked up how to sell stuff online real quick, signed up for one of those auction sites, and just put ’em all up for sale.

I didn’t list ’em individually, that would take too long. I just made a big bundle. “Rare comic collectibles, full set of X-Men from the 90s, original packaging.” Something like that. I didn’t know all the names, so I just put what I saw. Took some pictures and posted it. Didn’t take long for bids to start coming in. People really wanted these things. It was crazy. By the time my husband was coming home Sunday night, the auction was closed, and I had a decent chunk of money in my account. More than I thought a bunch of plastic toys would ever bring in. See, I was right! They were investments.

I cleaned up the office, made it look nice and tidy where the big boxes used to be. I even bought some new throw pillows for the living room with some of the money, to make it look like I was really trying to spruce up the place. I figured when he saw the extra money in our joint account, and the house looking nicer, he’d be like, “Oh, okay, she was just trying to help.”

He got home, tired but happy. He walked into his office to drop his bag, and that’s when he saw it. Or rather, didn’t see it. The empty spots on his shelves. His face went white. Then red. He started asking where they were. I told him, all casual-like, “Oh, those old things? I sold ’em. They were just collecting dust, and we needed the money. Don’t worry, I got a good price for ’em. You said they were investments, right? Well, I invested the money back into us.”

He just stared at me. Then he started yelling. Real loud. Calling me names I won’t repeat here, but it was really hurtful. He said I had no right, that I destroyed years of his hard work, that I stole from him. Stole! I’m his wife! We share everything! He said I ruined his life’s passion. His “life’s passion” was plastic toys, seriously? I tried to explain that it was for us, for our future, that he should be grateful. But he wasn’t listening. He just kept yelling, saying I was a heartless person and that I did it just to hurt him.

Now he’s barely talking to me. He sleeps on the couch. He won’t even look at me. I don’t understand why he’s so mad. I helped us out. I got rid of all that junk and got money for it. It’s not like I threw them out. I sold them for a good price. He should be thanking me for being so smart and resourceful. He acts like I took his dog or something, not just some old toys he never even touched. I really thought I was doing the right thing for both of us, for our marriage even. But now he’s making me feel like some kind of monster.

Am I The Jerk? I just don’t see how. I thought I was being practical and looking out for our shared future. People on here always talk about practical spouses. Well, that’s what I was. I hope you guys can see my side of it and tell me the truth, because I really think he’s just overreacting to something that was for his own good in the long run.
