Am I the Jerk for Refusing My Mother’s Move-In Request to Protect My Sanctuary and Sanity?

Okay, I need some outside perspective here because my head is about to explode. My family is acting like I’m some kind of monster, and honestly, I don’t get it. I’ve worked my entire life, scraped and saved, to build the life I have. A life of peace, order, and quiet. Something I never had growing up, let me tell you.

I live in a really lovely apartment. It’s not huge, but it’s perfectly laid out for one person. It’s minimalist, every single item has a purpose or a place. I have no pets, no kids, I keep it pristine. It’s my sanctuary. My safe space. I work from home, so this environment is crucial for my focus and my mental well-being. I rarely have people over, and when I do, it’s for a short, planned visit. This is just how I am. I like my space. I like my routine. It’s not selfish, it’s just who I am. I’m an introvert, I thrive on calm.

My mother, on the other hand, is… a lot. Always has been. She’s a wonderful person, don’t get me wrong, but she’s loud, she’s messy, and she has absolutely no concept of personal boundaries. Zero. If she visits, she rearranges my cupboards, tries to “help” me organize things I don’t want organized, and leaves her stuff everywhere. It drives me absolutely insane. But I love her, so I tolerate it in small doses.

Lately, her health hasn’t been great. She’s getting older, and she has some aches and pains, nothing life-threatening, but enough that she struggles with things like getting groceries or keeping her own place tidy. She lives in a small house about an hour away, which is pretty run down. I’ve offered to help her find a smaller, more manageable place, maybe a nice assisted living facility, but she refuses. She says she “doesn’t want to be put in a home.” Okay, fine, but what about the alternative?

So, last week, she called me up, crying. Apparently, her boiler broke, and it’s going to be a huge, expensive repair. She said she’s just so tired of dealing with everything and feeling alone. Then she dropped the bombshell. She asked if she could move in with me. Just “for a little while” until she “gets back on her feet.”

I was stunned. Absolutely floored. I have a spare room, yes. It’s my office/guest room, very small, but it has a pull-out couch. But it’s not set up for someone to live in. It’s where I keep my meticulously organized files, my second monitor, my special ergonomic chair. It’s a functional space, not just an empty room.

I tried to explain to her, gently, that it just wouldn’t work. I explained about my need for quiet, my routine, how my space is set up. I reminded her how she tends to leave things out, how she moves my belongings. I told her that my apartment just isn’t big enough for two people, especially two people with such different living styles. I said it would cause both of us immense stress and would probably ruin our relationship in the long run. I even offered again to help her find a new, smaller place, or to pay for a really good, reliable caretaker to come to her house several times a week. I said I’d help pay for the boiler repair too, of course.

She absolutely lost it. She accused me of being cold, heartless, and selfish. She said I cared more about my “perfect little apartment” than my own mother. She brought up all the sacrifices she made for me when I was a child. Which, yes, she did, and I appreciate them, but I’m an adult now, and I’ve helped her out countless times over the years. I’ve given her money, paid for vacations, bought her a new car when hers broke down. I’ve always been there for her, just not in a way that involves completely upending my entire existence.

Other family members got involved, of course. My aunt called me, telling me I need to “step up” and “do my duty.” My cousin said I was being “ridiculous” and that “it’s just a few months.” But it wouldn’t be “just a few months.” It would be indefinite. And it wouldn’t be “just” her; it would be her habits, her noise, her mess, her constant need for attention, all of it, every single day, in my carefully constructed sanctuary.

I feel like I’m being perfectly reasonable. I’ve offered financial support, practical solutions, and emotional support. But I’m not willing to sacrifice my peace, my home, and my mental health for a situation that I know will be a disaster for both of us. My home is not a free hotel or an old folks’ home. It’s my home. I earned it.

They’re making me feel awful, like I’m some terrible person, but I truly believe I’m setting a necessary boundary. I’m just trying to protect my own well-being. Am I being a jerk here? Or am I just trying to maintain some sanity in my own life? Please, tell me the truth, because everyone around me seems to think I’m evil.

Was I Wrong?
