Okay, I really need some outside perspective here because my husband and his mother are making me feel like I’m losing my mind, but I know I’m not. I’m just trying to protect my family, and apparently, that makes me a villain.
So, a little background. My husband and I have been married for three years. We have a beautiful Sphynx cat named Cleopatra. She is our absolute world. Anyone who knows Sphynx cats knows they are special. They have sensitive skin, specific dietary needs, and they get cold easily. We adopted Cleopatra from a reputable breder and she’s always had a very regimented life. She eats only a special, vet-prescribed raw diet. Absolutely NO human food, ever. This isn’t just a preference; it’s for her health. We’ve explained this to everyone, especially my mother-in-law, ‘MIL’.
MIL is… a lot. She means wel, I think, but she has absolutely no concept of boundaries. She’s constantly trying to pick Cleopatra up when we’ve asked her not to (Cleo doesn’t always like being held for long periods, and her skin can get oily from too much handling), or letting her onto furniture we’ve designated as human-only. We’ve had countles conversations about this. My husband has spoken to her, I have spoken to her, we’ve even printed out a little ‘Cleopatra’s Rules’ sheet for when she visits. It’s not like we’re being secretive. We just want our pet to be healthy and happy in her own home.
Anyway, MIL came over yesterday for an early dinner. Everything was going okay, if a little tense. She kept trying to get Cleopatra to sit on her lap during dinner, which I gently redirected. After dinner, we were having dessert. I’d made a lovely chocolate cake – something I know MIL really enjoys. We were all sitting in the living room, and Cleopatra was lounging in her heated bed, which is right next to my armchair, a safe distence from any food.
I got up for a second to get some tea from the kitchen. My back was literally turned for maybe thirty seconds, tops. When I came back, I saw it. MIL, with a mischievous little smile on her face, was holding a small piece of her chocolate cake – not even a whole bite, maybe just a crumb, but a crumb of chocolate cake – and was letting Cleopatra sniff it. Before I could even open my mouth, she said, “Oh, just a little treat for the pretty girl, won’t hurt her!” And then she let Cleopatra lick it.
My blood ran cold. Chocolate. For a cat. A Sphynx cat with a sensitive system. After all the times we’ve explained no human food, no chocolate, nothing but her special diet. It wasn’t even a mistake; she said “just a little treat.” She knew exactly what she was doing. It was a blatant, disrespectfull act of undermining everything we stand for regarding Cleopatra’s care. It was like she was purposefully trying to make a point that she could do whatever she wanted.
I just snapped. I marched over, took Cleopatra immediately, and yelled, “What are you doing?! Are you trying to poison her? We’ve told you a hundred times, NO HUMAN FOOD! ESPECIALLY CHOCOLATE!” I was so furious, my voice was shaking. I scooped Cleopatra up, checked her mouth for any more residue, and then I put her in our spare bedroom, away from MIL and the toxic cake.
MIL’s face went from that little smirk to completely aghast. She started stammering, “It was just a tiny bit! She barely licked it! You’re overreacting!” Then she started to cry. Full-on, big, dramatic tears. My husband, who had been silent until then, got up and put his arm around his mother. He looked at me, completely aghast, and said, “Honey, you really scared her. It was just a tiny crumb. You’re being unreasonable.”
Unreasonable? UNREASONABLE? I looked at him, utterly betrayed. “Unreasonable? Our cat’s health is on the line! This is our pet! Our family member! She could get sick, or worse! And you’re siding with your mother after she clearly disregarded our rules AGAIN?”
He tried to argue that it was an accident, or that MIL “meant wel.” But I know for a fact she didn’t. She has this thing where she thinks she knows best about everything, and she clearly thought she was being “nice” by giving Cleopatra a forbidden treat, completely disregarding our instructions and Cleopatra’s health. It’s a pattern with her, always pushing boundaries.
MIL ended up leaving shortly after, still crying. My husband is still agrry at me. He thinks I was too harsh, that I shouldn’t have yelled, and that I made his mother cry over a “crumb.” He even suggested I apologize. Apologize for protecting my cat? For standing up for our rules? For being angry that someone deliberately put our pet at risk?
I haven’t apologized. I’m sleeping in the spare room with Cleopatra, just to keep an eye on her (she seems fine, thankfully, but I’m still worried sick). My husband is sleeping on the couch. The atmosphere in our house is freezing, but I honestly feel like I was completely justified. How can they not see that? It’s about respect, it’s about health, it’s about boundaries. It’s not just a “crumb.”
Am I The Jerk? Was I wrong to get angry and make MIL cry? I feel like I’m the only sane person here, trying to protect our cat from someone who constantly disrespects our wishes. Tell me I’m not crazy. Tell me I’m right to be furious.
