I wuz just tryin to git sum new socks at the big store, the one with the blue sign. You know, the one with all the ailes that go on forever. It wuz a Satarday afternune so it wuz kinda busy, but not like super crazy. I like goin on Satardays cuz thats when they put out the new stuff for the week and sometimes you can find a good deal. I wuz headin over to the mens wear, past the toy section, when I heard it.
It wuz a loud sound, like a bunch of plastic blocks fallin over, then a little kid cryin. I looked over cuz thats just wut you do, right? And there wuz a woman, she wuz wearin sum kinda flowery top and had her hair pulled back real tight. She wuz standin next to a mess of toy cars and boxes that had clearly fell off a shelf. Two small kids, one a boy with a bright red shirt and the other a little girl in pigtales, wuz standin near her. The boy wuz the one cryin, kinda soft like, and the girl wuz just starin at the mess.
Then I heard the woman, she wuz talkin real loud to a store worker who had just walked up. The worker wuz a lady, probly in her thirtys, with a name tag that said ‘Sarah’. Sarah had a real calm face, like she’d seen alot of stuff like this before. The flower-top woman, I’m gonna just call her Karen, wuz pointin at the mess and then at her boy. She wuz yellin about how the store shelves wuz unsafe and how her poor son wuz traumatized by the fallin toys. She said he coulda got hurt real bad and now he wuz scared to even walk in the toy isle.
Sarah, she just listened, real still like. Karen wuz goin on about how the store needed to do sumthin about it, and how her kids deserved sumthin for free to make up for the scare. She kept pointin to a big box of sum kinda robot toy on anuther shelf and sayin how that would help her son feel better. And then she pointed to a doll that looked like a princess for her little girl, sayin the girl wuz upset too even if she wuz bein quiet. She wanted both, for free, becuz of the “incident.”
I wuz standin there, by the socks, just tryin to understan wut wuz happenin. The kid wuz barely sniffelin now, more just lookin bored. Sarah started to pick up sum of the toy cars, real slow and careful. She told Karen in a nice voice that she wuz sorry the display fell, but she saw the kids had been playin with the bottom shelf before it came down. She said the store cant give out free toys just becuz a display fell, especially if it wuz caused by playin with the products. Karen’s face went all red. She said Sarah wuz bein rude and accusin her kids of sumthin they dident do. She said her kids wuz angles and would never mess up a store.
Then sumthin else started to happen. This guy, he looked about twenty-three or twenty-four, with a real slick haircut and a t-shirt that said sumthin about ‘Boss Mode’, walked up. He had his phone in his hand, like he wuz filmmin or sumthin, but he wuz just carryin it. He started talkin real loud, interruptin Karen. He said, “Yeah, she’s right! This store is always pullin stunts like this. My mom had to fight them for a refund on a shirt last week that had a loose thread. They owe you, lady! Big time!” He pointed at Sarah like it wuz her fault, even though she wuz just the worker. He puffed out his chest and looked around, like he expected everyone to clap for him bein so smart.
Sarah, she just looked at him, and her eyes got a little bit tighter, but she dident say nothin to him right away. Karen then turned her anger to him, kinda, like she appreciated the support but he wuz stealin her spotlight. She said, “Exactly! And my kids are traumatized! They need those robot and princess toys to feel safe again!”
While all this wuz goin on, the little boy in the red shirt, he saw his chance. He wuz bored and probly dident like all the yellin. He just kinda took off, runnin right down the isle, away from the mess and his mom. The little girl stayed put, still lookin at the toys. Karen and the Boss Mode guy wuz too busy arguinin with Sarah to notice. The boy, he ran right into a big, round display of bouncy balls. They wuz all stacked up real high, and when he hit it, the whole thing shivered. Then, pop! The whole stack of bouncy balls came tumblin down, rollin all over the floor like sum kinda crazy, colorful river. The little boy fell over and started cryin for real this time, not the soft sniffelin, but real loud wails.
Now Karen finally noticed her son. She ran over to him, pushin past Sarah and the Boss Mode guy. She picked him up and started yellin at Sarah again, sayin it wuz the store’s fault for havin dangerous displays. The Boss Mode guy, he started shoutin sumthin about negligence and lawyers, makin it all sound like a big movie. Sarah sighed, a real quiet sigh. She pulled out her little walkie-talkie thing and talked into it, askin for a manager to come to the toy section, isle seven.
I kept lookin at everything. My aunt got sum kinda allergy to pine tree smell, so I always notice when sumthin smells strong. Just then, a store employee with a big cart full of cleanin stuff rolled by the end of the isle. The smell of pine cleaner wuz really strong. Karen, who wuz still holdin her cryin boy, suddenly went all stiff. Her face went from red to kinda pale, and she started coughin. She put her hand over her mouth and nose. “Ugh! What is that horrible smell? It’s poison!” she yelled, like she wuz gonna faint. She really seemed to hate the smell of that cleanin stuff. It wuz a wierd thing to complain about when so much else wuz happenin.
A few minutes later, a lady in a blue blazer with a ‘Manager’ name tag, came walkin up. She looked tired, but she had the same kinda calm face as Sarah. Sarah quickly explained everything, real low, to the manager. The manager listened, then she looked at Karen, then at the mess, then at the Boss Mode guy who wuz still mutterin about lawyers into his phone, pretendin to talk to sumone.
The manager spoke in a firm but quiet voice. She told Karen that she understood displays sometimes fall, but that children must be supervised for their safety and for the safety of other shoppers. She said that becuz her children had caused two separate messes, and it wuz clear they wuz playin with the products, the store wuz not responsible for free items. She said if any toys wuz broken, Karen would need to pay for them. She then told the Boss Mode guy, “Sir, if you’re not involved in this situation, I ask that you please move along and not interfere with our store operations.” The Boss Mode guy looked shocked, like he dident expect to be told anything. He mumbled sumthin and walked away, still lookin at his phone, but he dident seem to be talkin to anyone anymore.
Karen tried to argue sum more, talkin about how her kids needed those toys for emotional support, but the manager just shook her head. She said, “No, ma’am. We’re not giving out free toys. If you’d like to purchase them, you’re welcome to. Otherwise, we ask that you gather your children and exit the store.” She then told Sarah to help clean up the messes. Karen huffed, her face still kinda pale from the cleaner smell, and grabbed her little girl’s hand. She put her cryin son down and he wuz still sniffelin. She just walked away without buyin nothin, leavin the mess for Sarah to deal with. Sarah just started pickin up the bouncy balls, like it wuz just part of her everyday job.
