It was a tuesday afternoon and i was already having the worst day of my entire life. My car would not start this morning so i had to walk all the way to the dollar store in the hot sun to buy some cheap soup. My feet hurt and my stomach was growling real loud. To make it worse i have a very rare medical thing called dextrocardia which means my heart is actually on the right side of my chest instead of the left side. Most people do not know about this but it makes my chest feel tight when i get stressed out and today i was very stressed. I like things to be organized and perfect but the store was a total mess with boxes everywhere which made me mad because stores should always be clean and neat.
I was standing by the cosmetic aisle trying to find my soup when i saw this girl. She looked about twenty years old and she was wearing a very tight pink dress that was way too small for her. She was a bit chubby but she walked like she was a famous supermodel on a runway. She kept fixing her hair in the reflection of a makeup mirror and smiling at herself like she was the most beautiful creature to ever walk the earth. Her face was covered in way too much orange makeup and she had a mean look in her eyes. Next to her was this guy who looked like her husband. He was wearing dirty sweatpants and he looked extremely tired and angry like he wanted to be anywhere else in the world.
This girl was looking at a shelf of expensive perfumes that were locked up behind a plastic screen with a thick metal wire. I watched her because she was doing something very weird. She pulled out a pair of silver nail clippers from her purse and started trying to cut the thick metal security wire. It was very stupid because nail clippers cannot cut metal wire at all. She was pressing so hard her fingers turned white and she was grunting. She kept telling her husband that she deserved this perfume for free because her face was so pretty and the store should be happy she even walked inside their ugly building. She truly believed that the laws about stealing did not apply to her because of her looks.
Her husband looked very annoyed and told her to hurry up because people were looking. He started kicking a display of plastic cups on the floor because he was impatient. The cups went rolling everywhere which made me super angry because now the aisle was even more messy than before. I hate when people do not respect the rules of a store. The cashier at the front register finally noticed what was happening. The cashier was an older lady who looked like she had worked there for thirty years and she was totally done with dealing with bad customers today. She yelled over to the girl and told her that she needed to put the nail clippers away and stop trying to break the lock.
The pink dress girl did not stop. Instead she turned around and looked at the cashier with a very nasty face. She told the cashier that she was much too beautiful to be talked to in that tone of voice. She said the perfume belonged to her now and she was going to take it home without paying because she was a special person. Her husband started grabbing random bags of chips off the shelves and throwing them on the floor to create a distraction. He was screaming at the top of his lungs about how his wife was a queen and they could do whatever they wanted. It was a complete disaster and the store was getting ruined.
The cashier looked very tired and reached for her store phone. She pressed some buttons and paged the store manager to come to the front immediately. She also picked up her personal cell phone and called the mall security guards who work in the big plaza outside. But those security guards are always lazy and they never actually show up when you need them. I knew we would be waiting forever for them and they probly would never show up at all. We stood there for about five minutes while the girl kept hacking at the metal wire with her tiny clippers and her husband kept kicking things.
Then something totally random happened that nobody expected. A little kid who was shopping with his mom in the next aisle was playing with a big red bouncy ball. He dropped the ball and it bounced really high right over the shelf. It hit a big shelf of glass maple syrup bottles right above where the pink dress girl was standing. One of the big glass bottles tipped over and fell right onto the floor. It smashed into a million pieces and thick sticky brown syrup went flying everywhere. It got all over the pink dress girl’s legs and her white shoes.
She screamed a very loud high pitch scream like she was being attacked by bees. She started jumping up and down because the syrup was very sticky and dirty. Because she was jumping and not looking where she was going she slipped on the wet syrup. She went flying backwards and her elbow hit me right in the right side of my chest. It hit my heart directly where my dextrocardia is and it made me gasp for air because it hurt so bad. Her husband tried to grab her but he slipped too and fell right on top of her. They were both covered in sticky brown syrup and dirt from the floor.
Right at that moment the store manager finally walked out of the back room. He had a clipboard and looked very confused. He saw the broken glass and the syrup and the two people rolling around on the floor. The pink dress girl was crying now because her pretty dress was completely ruined and sticky. She was trying to tell the manager that I was the one who pushed her but the cashier spoke up and said that was a lie. The manager told the girl and her husband that they had to leave the store immediately and if they ever came back he would have the real police arrest them for vandalism and trying to steal.
The husband got up and dragged his sticky wife off the floor. They walked out of the sliding doors soaking wet and covered in dirt and syrup. They looked very foolish and not attractive at all. My chest still hurt from where she hit me but I was glad she did not get the perfume. I bought my soup from the tired cashier and walked back home in the hot sun thinking about how some people are just born without any brains.
