I want to write about something that happened to me last week at the big grocery store near my apartment. I am still learning how to write well in English because I moved here only eighteen months ago. Sometimes my sentences are simple, but I want to share this story because it made me think a lot about how people act in public. I am a person who likes to be around people sometimes, but I also need quiet time to feel happy. Because of this, I observe people very closely when I am out in the world.
I have a very unusual thing in my mind. When I see numbers, my brain shows them to me as colors. The number five is always a very bright banana yellow to me. This is not very common for most people. When I walked into the store, I looked at the checkout lanes and saw that lane number five had a very bright yellow light in my mind. I decided to stand in that line because the color felt warm and friendly. The store was busy because it was five o’clock in the evening, and many people wanted to buy food after their jobs. The line was moving slowly.
A Wild Karen Appears
The story starts to move very fast here. A woman with short, very bright blonde hair walked into the store. She wore expensive sunglasses on top of her head and a very bright pink jacket. In her arm, she carried a very small white dog with long hair. The dog had a pink ribbon in its hair that matched the woman’s jacket. This dog looked very clean, and it did not look like a helper dog. It was just a pet. The woman did not grab a shopping cart. She only held three small cans of expensive dog food and a bottle of green juice in her hands.
She did not walk to the back of the line like everyone else. Instead, she walked past me and past three other people. She went straight to the front of lane number five. I felt my heart beat a little faster because I do not like when people do not follow the rules of the store. I wanted to say something, but my quiet side made me stay still and watch. The young girl working at the cash register looked very tired. She was trying to scan a big box of diapers for a man who was first in line.
The woman with the dog pushed her body close to the man. She put her dog food cans on the black moving belt. She did not look at the man or the cashier. She looked at her phone and patted her dog. The dog made a small, high noise. The woman told her dog that they would be home very soon to eat their special dinner. She spoke very loudly so that everyone could hear her voice.
Karen Shows Her Entitlement
The man with the diapers looked at her with surprise. He asked her what she was doing. The woman looked at him like he was a bug on the floor. She told him that she only had four items and a very hungry, delicate pet. She said that her time was extremely important because she had a meeting to attend. She believed that because her dog was small and hungry, she did not have to wait in the line with the rest of us. She spoke with a very flat voice, as if she was explaining something to a very small child.
The cashier stopped scanning the diapers. She looked very nervous. Her face became red. She told the woman in the pink jacket that there was a line and she must go to the back of it. The woman with the dog laughed. It was not a happy laugh. She told the cashier that she was a regular customer who spent a lot of money in this store every week. She said she would not stand in the back because her dog was getting too warm inside the store.
The cashier looked like she wanted to cry. She reached under her counter and pressed a red button. She told the woman that she was calling the store manager to come and help with the situation. We all stood there waiting. The store is very large, so I knew the manager would take a few minutes to walk from the back offices to our lane. The minutes felt very long and very slow. The air in the store felt thick.
Karen Almost Gets Karma
While we were waiting, something else happened that made the situation more difficult. A young boy who was walking with his mother dropped a large bottle of red sports drink on the floor. The bottle did not break, but the cap came off. The red liquid sprayed all over the floor right between the woman with the dog and the man with the diapers. It created a big, sticky puddle. This puddle made it impossible for anyone to move forward without stepping in the sticky red juice.
The man with the diapers had to step back quickly to save his shoes. This created a physical space between the front of the line and the cash register. The woman with the dog tried to step around the red puddle, but her high shoes were very slippery. She almost fell, and her dog let out a sharp yip. She became very angry and started to complain about the store being unsafe and dirty.
Karen Gets Outsmarted
A tall man who was standing behind me in the line stepped forward. He did not look angry. He had a very calm face and spoke in a very soft, friendly voice. He looked at the woman and then looked at her little white dog. He told her that her dog was one of the most beautiful dogs he had ever seen in his life. He asked her if the dog was a special royal breed from Europe.
The woman stopped complaining about the sticky floor. Her face changed, and she looked very proud. She told the man that her dog was indeed a very rare breed and required special care. The tall man nodded his head with great respect. He then told her that he knew a lot about this specific breed of dog. He explained to her that these dogs are extremely sensitive to loud noises and stressful environments like a busy grocery store checkout lane.
He suggested to her that a woman of her high social standing and intelligence would surely want to protect her delicate dog from the negative energy of the angry people in the line. He told her that if she stayed at the front of the line, the bad feelings from the other customers might make her dog sick or ruin its beautiful hair. He said that a truly smart dog owner always chooses to keep their pet in a quiet, peaceful space away from the front of the line to show how much they care about their pet’s health.
The woman looked at the tall man. She thought about his words for a moment. She looked at her dog, and then she looked at the sticky red juice on the floor. She told the tall man that he was completely right. She said that she had just decided that her dog’s mental health was much more important than saving five minutes of time. She announced to everyone that she was choosing to step out of the line to protect her precious pet from our negative energy.
She picked up her dog food cans and her green juice from the belt. She walked away to the far side of the store where it was quiet, looking very proud of her decision. She believed she had made a very smart and kind choice for her dog, and she did not realize that she had just given up her spot in the line because of her own pride.
The manager of the store never arrived to help us. The cashier waited for another minute, but no one came. The man with the diapers was finally able to pay for his items after stepping over the red puddle. I watched the young cashier’s hands shake as she counted the money. I felt very sorry for her because she had to work so hard and face such difficult people every single day just to make a living.
