I gotta tell you, sometimes I just don’t get my mother-in-law. She’s a good person, I guess, but she can be so dramatic about the silliest things. It’s like she lives in her own little world where everything has to be just so, and if you mess it up even a little bit, it’s the end of the world. My husband, bless his heart, he just shrugs and says, “That’s just Mom,” but I think it’s more than that. I think she sometimes just likes to make a fuss.
This whole thing started with her dining room table. Now, this table, it’s old. Like, really, really old. She always talks about how it was her grandmother’s, and then her mother’s, and how it came all the way from some fancy country. I don’t remember which one. Anyway, she keeps it in her formal dining room, which nobody ever uses. Seriously, that room is like a museum. The chairs are all fancy too, with fabric I’m scared to even look at wrong. Every time we go there for Thanksgiving or Christmas, she puts this special tablecloth on it, and then another pad under that, and then placemats. You can barely even see the table. And she’s always, always saying, “Be careful! Don’t scratch it! Use a coaster!” It’s exhausting. My kids, they’re not even allowed in that room unless it’s a holiday, and then they get the evil eye if they even breathe too hard near the table.
My point is, it’s just a table. A really old table, sure, but still just a table. It’s meant to be used, right? Not just looked at under a bunch of covers. I mean, what’s the point of having something nice if you never actually use it for what it’s for? I kept telling my husband, “Honey, that table is beautiful, but it’s a shame it just sits there.” He’d just nod. He knows how his mom is.
So, last week, my family, my parents and my brother and his wife, they were coming into town. It was kind of a last-minute thing, just a casual dinner. Nothing fancy. We usually have them over at our place, but our dining table is a bit small for everyone, and my mother-in-law lives pretty close and has a bigger house. My husband suggested we just do it at her place since she has more room, and she was happy to host. She’s usually great with hosting, just not with her table.
I figured, okay, this is a perfect chance. We have a lot of people, and her big dining table would be perfect. She usually sets up a buffet in the kitchen for casual meals, but I thought, no, let’s actually sit everyone down at the big table. It’s more neighborly. I asked her about it, very nicely, and she got this look on her face. “Oh, honey,” she said, “that table is for formal occasions. We can just use the kitchen island and the patio table for everyone.” But I pushed a little. “MIL,” I said, “it’s just a dinner. It’ll be so nice for everyone to sit together.” She still looked unsure, but I think she could tell I really wanted to use it, and she’s usually a people-pleaser. So she sighed and said, “Okay, but we need to be extra careful. I’ll get the tablecloth and the pads.”
I was like, “No, no, MIL, it’s okay! We’re just having pizza and wings, nothing fancy. Let’s just use it as it is. It’s a beautiful table, everyone should see it!” She looked a little worried, but I smiled at her and said, “It’ll be fine!” I think she just wanted to make me happy, so she gave in.
So my family came over, and everyone was having a good time. We got the pizza and wings all set up. My brother brought a big hot platter of his famous spicy buffalo wings, and it was still really warm. I thought, you know what, this table needs to be seen. No tablecloth. But I also know MIL is a stickler for protecting things. So I grabbed a magazine, a glossy one, and put it under the hot platter of wings. Not just directly on the table, you know? I’m not totally careless. I thought that would be enough. It wasn’t like a super hot pan straight off the stove.
Everyone ate, everyone talked, it was a really nice evening. My brother’s wings were a hit. When everyone left and we were cleaning up, I moved the magazine. And there it was. A big, white, cloudy circle right on the beautiful wood. A heat mark. I guess the magazine wasn’t thick enough or something. It wasn’t huge, maybe the size of a dinner plate. But it was definitely there.
My husband saw it first. He kind of just froze. Then my mother-in-law came in from the kitchen, and her eyes went right to it. She didn’t say anything at first. Just stood there, looking at the table, then at me. Her face got all red. I tried to explain, “MIL, I put a magazine under it! I really did! I thought it would protect it.” She just started breathing really fast. Then she started to cry. Full-on, big tears, sniffing and everything. “My grandmother’s table!” she wailed. “You know how much this means to me! I told you to be careful!”
I was honestly shocked. It’s a mark! You can probably buff it out or something. It’s not like I chopped it in half. My husband tried to calm her down, but she just kept crying and saying how I disrespected her and her family history. I told her, “It’s just a table, MIL! Accidents happen! I tried to protect it!” But she wouldn’t listen. She just kept saying how I ignored her wishes and how I was so thoughtless. My husband even got mad at me later, which I think is totally unfair.
I was trying to make her happy by actually using the table. And I tried to protect it, really. It was an accident. She’s acting like I deliberately ruined something precious. But it’s just a table, and it’s meant to be used, not just looked at. You can’t expect people to treat everything like it’s a priceless artifact if you want to use it for a normal dinner.
Am I The Jerk? I honestly think she’s overreacting. I was trying to be considerate and make her happy by bringing life to her formal dining room. It was an accident, and I put something under the hot plate. People need to chill out about old stuff sometimes. Tell me I’m not crazy for thinking she’s the one who needs to get over this.
