Am I the Jerk for cutting my neighbor’s encroaching vine off my fence without permission?

I have a problem with my neighbor, and I need to know if I am wrong in how I acted.

I bought my house two years ago. It is a nice house with a small yard. The house has a wooden fence on one side, which separates my yard from my neighbor’s yard. When I bought the house, my agent told me this fence was on the property line but was mainly my responsibility for upkeep, as the previous owner had put it in. So, I have always seen it as my fence. I painted it last year, and I keep it in good condition.

My neighbor, let’s call her “Ms. Lily” because she likes flowers so much, moved in about six months after me. She is a very friendly person, always smiling. She has many plants in her yard, which is nice. But a few months ago, she planted a vine, a climbing plant, right next to our shared fence. I did not think much of it at first. It was small, just a little green plant. She said, “It will be so beautiful when it flowers!” I said, “Okay, yes, nice.”

The problem is, this plant grew very, very fast. In just a few weeks, it was already reaching the top of the fence. Then, it started to grow

over

the fence. And then, it grew

through

the fence. Soon, my side of the fence was covered in this vine. It was not just green, but it started to flower. The flowers were pretty, a bright purple color. But then, the flowers would die, and the leaves would fall. My patio, which is right next to this fence, was always covered in dead flowers and leaves. I had to sweep every day. It also made the fence look messy from my side, and I worried it would damage the wood, making it damp and inviting insects.

I tried to be patient. I thought maybe it would slow down. But no. It just kept growing. It was truly everywhere. I decided I must do something. I am a person who believes in clear boundaries, especially when it comes to property. If something is on my side, it is my responsibility, and I have the right to manage it. This vine was now very much on my side of the fence, making a big mess.

One sunny Saturday, I went out with my gardening shears. I decided I would cut back the vine only to the fence line. I was very careful. I did not go into her yard. I just cut everything that was on my side. I made a neat line, exactly where the fence stood. It took me a long time because the vine was so thick and strong. I gathered all the cut pieces, put them in bags, and put them out for trash collection. My patio looked clean again. The fence looked clean. I felt I had done a good job, maintaining my property.

Later that day, Ms. Lily came to my door. She was not smiling. Her face was very red. She said, “What did you do to my beautiful vine?”

I explained, “Ms. Lily, the vine was growing very much onto my property. It was making a mess on my patio, and I was worried it would damage the fence. I only cut what was on my side of the fence.”

She said, “But it’s my plant! You should have asked me! It was so beautiful! You have ruined it!” She was almost shouting. She said I was a bad neighbor and that I had no right. She said I was disrespectful.

I was confused. I tried to explain again that it was on my side. “Ms. Lily, when a plant grows over a property line, the part that is on the other side can be trimmed. This is a common understanding of property law. I did not touch your plant on your side, only what was on my property.”

She did not listen. She just kept saying I should have asked and that it was rude. She went back to her house, and now she does not wave anymore. She does not smile. When I see her, she looks away.

Now I am wondering if I truly made a mistake. I thought I was being reasonable. I did not want to bother her, so I just acted on my own property. I did not want to start a discussion about it because I felt my right was clear. It was causing a problem for me, and I fixed it. Is it really necessary to ask permission to cut something that is on your own property, even if it belongs to your neighbor’s plant originally? I think not. I believe I was maintaining my space and protecting my property.

Am I The Jerk? Please tell me honestly what you think. I believe I acted with logic and respect for boundaries.
