Am I the Jerk for cutting the first slice of a fancy birthday cake, ruining MIL’s planned presentation?

Okay so I need some unbiased opinions here becasue I’m honestly at my wits end with my mother-in-law. She is alwasy trying to control everything and make a big deal out of nothing. This past weekend was my spouse’s birthday, and we had a small gathering at our house. My MIL, as per usual, insisted on bringing the cake. I told her I could handle it, I even offered to bake one myself, but noooo, it had to be her special, custom-ordered, organic, gluten-free, free-range, whatever-else-she-calls-it cake from some fancy bakery downtown.

Now, I don’t care about all that stuff, but my spouse does, a little. And MIL alwasy makes a huge song and dance about how much effort she puts into getting this specific cake. She had been talking about this cake for weeks. How it was a limited edition flavor, only available this one weekend, and she had to pre-order it months in advance. She even sent me pictures of it when she picked it up, saying “Isn’t it divine? Your spouse is going to just ADORE it!” It was a decent looking cake, I’ll give her that. It had like, these intricate sugar flowers on top and a little edible gold leaf thing going on. Very over the top, if you ask me, but whatever. It’s for my spouse, I can tolerate it.

The party was going well. People were eating, chatting, usual stuff. MIL arrives with this cake, wrapped in its special box, and she parades it into the kitchen like it’s the crown jewels. She puts it on the counter, gives it a protective pat, and then starts telling everyone the whole saga of getting this cake. How she drove for an hour, how she almost didn’t get it, how it’s the best cake in the city. Blah, blah, blah. Everyone was standing around, listening to her, but also getting a bit hungry, you know?

We’d just finished dinner, and I was famished. I hadn’t had much becasue I was busy hosting, making sure everyone had drinks and everything. My stomach was growling. The cake was just sitting there on the counter. MIL was still talking to my spouse about something in the living room, and the other guests were mingling. No one was paying attention to the cake, and no one had suggested cutting it yet. I looked at it, and honestly, it was calling to me. I thought, “Well, it’s my spouse’s birthday, and I’m their spouse. I have every right to a piece.”

So, I went into the kitchen, got a knife, and cut myself a decent slice. I mean, it wasn’t a tiny sliver, but it wasn’t half the cake either. I made sure to get a good portion of the sugar flowers and gold leaf too, becasue that’s the best part, right? The fancy stuff. I didn’t think anything of it. I just wanted a piece of cake. I took my plate, went to the dining room, and sat down to enjoy it.

Maybe five minutes later, MIL comes storming into the dining room, her face red. She looks at my plate, then at the cake in the kitchen, then back at me. “What HAVE you done?!” she practically shrieked. My spouse comes in too, looking confused. I just looked at her. “I’m eating cake, MIL. It’s a party.”

She started going on about how I didn’t wait, how I “ruined the presentation,” how that was “the ceremonial first slice” that my spouse was supposed to cut. Apparently, the sugar flowers were specifically arranged for the “big reveal” and I just hacked into them. I was like, “MIL, it’s a cake. You eat it. And it’s my spouse’s birthday, I’m allowed to have some of the cake too. I was hungry!”

My spouse, bless their heart, tried to mediate, but MIL was having none of it. She kept saying I was disrespectful and selfish, and that I’d ruined the special moment she had planned. Seriously? A moment for a cake? It’s just dessert! I told her she was overreacting, and that if she wanted people to wait, she shoudlve said something or put a sign on it. Or, you know, actually cut it when it was time. It was just sitting there! How was I supposed to know about her “ceremonial first slice” and “big reveal” for a cake?

Now, my spouse is upset with me too, saying I should have waited, and that it was important to MIL. But I don’t see how. It’s a cake. You eat it. I work hard, I host these parties, I deserve a treat too. I didn’t think I did anything wrong. It’s not like I ate the whole thing or anything, I just had a slice. A slightly larger, decorated slice, but still just a slice. MIL is giving me the silent treatment, and my spouse is being distant. I just don’t get it. They’re making such a mountain out of a molehill.

Am I The Jerk? Tell me honestly, becasue I think they are being completely unreasonable here.
