So me and my husband, we finally got our own place a couple years back. It was a big deal, you know? Our first real house, with a yard and everything. My husband’s mom, my mother-in-law, she was real excited for us. She actually helped us out a ton with the down payment, which was super nice of her. Like, it was a good chunk of change. And then, as a housewarming gift, she paid to have a really nice, big pool put in the backyard. It was always a dream of mine to have a pool, and she made it happen. We were really grateful, truly.
But things started to get a little… much. You know? As soon as the pool was done, it was like our backyard turned into the neighborhood hangout. My mother-in-law started inviting her sisters, her friends, even some cousins we barely know, to just come over and use the pool whenever they wanted. They wouldn’t even call first sometimes. We’d be having a quiet Saturday morning, just me and my husband trying to relax, and suddenly there would be five cars in the driveway and a bunch of people setting up towels by the pool.
It wasn’t just the pool either. They’d bring their own food, sometimes, but then they’d always use our grill. And not just for a hot dog or two. They’d bring like, a whole spread, and expect us to have the propane tank full and everything. And they’d use our outdoor kitchen stuff, like our good platters and bowls, and sometimes they wouldn’t even clean them up right. We’d find like, dried-up barbecue sauce on things days later. And forget about privacy. We couldn’t even go outside to water our plants without feeling like we were intruding on their party.
I tried to talk to my husband about it. He’s good, but he’s also really close to his mom. He said, “She helped us so much, honey. It’s just her way of enjoying it with us.” But it wasn’t enjoying it with us. It was them enjoying it, and us being like, the free resort staff. We’d have to buy more pool chemicals, keep the backyard spotless, and honestly, sometimes we’d just stay inside with the blinds closed because we didn’t want to deal with it. We couldn’t even have our own friends over for a barbecue without having to make sure there wasn’t already a crowd of my mother-in-law’s people there.
The last straw was last month. It was a Tuesday, my one day off work. I had planned a whole day to just chill by the pool with a book. I even bought a new floaty. I went out there, and what do you know? My mother-in-law and three of her church friends were already out there. They had their own cooler, their own music going on a portable speaker, and they were already in the pool. My mother-in-law just waved at me like it was totally normal. She even said, “Oh good, you’re here! Can you grab us some more towels from the laundry room? We’re all out here.”
I just froze. It felt like a punch to the gut. I went inside, and I told my husband, “That’s it. I can’t do this anymore. This is our house. We don’t get any peace. We don’t get any privacy.” He saw how upset I was. So, we talked. And we decided we had to do something.
The next day, my husband put a lock on the gate to the backyard. It’s a combination lock, so you need the code to get in. And he called his mom. He explained that we loved her, and we appreciated everything, but we needed our space. We told her that if she wanted to come over, she needed to call us first, like anybody else would. And that it needed to be planned, not just a drop-in whenever she felt like it. We also said that the backyard wasn’t a public place for her to invite whoever she wanted without talking to us first.
She absolutely lost it. She started screaming at my husband, saying we were ungrateful. She brought up all the money she gave us for the down payment and how she paid for the pool. She said we were selfish and that she only wanted to share the joy with her family and friends. She even said we were trying to keep her away from her son and that I was turning him against her. My husband tried to explain that it wasn’t like that, but she just kept going. She hung up on him, and she hasn’t talked to us since. It’s been two weeks, and she’s been telling everyone in the family how terrible we are.
I just don’t get it. We appreciate what she did, really. But that doesn’t mean she gets to own our backyard and our peace and quiet. We’re grown-ups, we have our own lives. We just wanted some boundaries. We still want her to visit, just not like it’s a free public park. We bought a house to have our own space, not to be a hotel for all her friends. My husband is feeling really bad about it, but I told him we did the right thing.
Am I The Jerk? I feel like we were totally reasonable here. We just want to live in our own house without a constant parade of people. Please tell me if you think I’m wrong, but I really believe we had a right to do this.
