Am I the Jerk for leaving my old lunch and hogging the microwave, causing a breakroom blow-up?

So I gotta ask people, what’s the deal here? I work at this place, you know, just a regular office job, nothing fancy. And we got a breakroom for lunch and stuff. Most people are chill, everyone just does their own thing. But there’s this one lady, Brenda. Man, Brenda is something else. She’s always got her nose in everything, always got an opinion on how things should be.

I like to keep things simple. When I bring my lunch, sometimes I forget to take my container home right away. Life happens, right? I got a lot on my mind. My wife packs my lunch, bless her heart, and sometimes it’s like a big sandwich or a whole leftover dinner. So I eat what I can, and if there’s a little bit left, I just put it back in the fridge. I figure I’ll get it tomorrow. What’s the big deal? It’s a fridge, it keeps things cold. It’s not like it’s going bad overnight. Maybe a couple days, tops.

Brenda, though. Brenda acts like I’m committing a crime against humanity or something. She leaves little notes on my containers. “Please remove by EOD.” “This food has expired.” “Your leftovers are now a science experiment.” Honestly, it’s just food. If it’s still good, it’s still good. If not, whatever. But she’s always putting notes. And then she started just tossing my stuff. Like, she didn’t even ask. Just straight up opened the fridge, grabbed my container, and dumped it in the trash. The first time, I was like, “Hey, what was that for?” She just looked at me with this real stiff face and said, “It was growing legs.” I didn’t see no legs. It was perfectly fine. Maybe a little fuzzy but that’s just flavor.

Another thing is the microwave. Everyone uses the microwave, right? That’s what it’s for. So I bring my lunch, usually something that needs a good long heat. Like, you know, a big bowl of chili or a casserole. Sometimes it takes a few minutes, maybe three, four minutes. And sometimes it’s not hot enough, so I gotta put it in for another minute. Or two. It needs to be hot. I don’t like lukewarm food. So yeah, I might stand there for a bit, make sure my food is perfect. People can wait a minute, it’s not a race. There’s only so many microwaves in the world, and we got one here.

Brenda, again, always got something to say. She’ll stand there, tapping her foot. Or she’ll say, “Are you almost done? Some of us have meetings.” Like, my lunch break is my lunch break. I got an hour, I’m gonna use it. If she’s got a meeting, she should plan better. Not my problem. She even started trying to schedule microwave times, like putting up a sign-up sheet. A sign-up sheet for the microwave! Who does that? I just ignored it. It’s ridiculous. I’m not gonna sign up to heat my lunch. That’s just silly. It’s a first-come, first-served world, last I checked.

Then last week, things really went off the rails. I brought in a big ol’ plate of spaghetti and meatballs. My wife made it, and it’s like, a two-day meal for me. So I heated up half for lunch, and it splattered a little bit in the microwave. Happens to everyone. It’s just food. I figured I’d clean it next time I used it, or maybe someone else would. It’s not a big deal, right? It’s not like it’s gonna hurt anyone. It’s just a little bit of sauce.

Brenda saw it. Oh, she saw it alright. She came storming out of the breakroom, holding a paper towel with a tiny bit of my spaghetti sauce on it. She walked straight up to my desk, slammed the paper towel down, and said, “This is unacceptable! You need to clean up after yourself! This breakroom is a shared space, not your personal pigsty!”

I looked at her. I was just trying to eat my lunch. I told her, “Hey, calm down. It’s just a little sauce. I’ll get it later.” And she just went off. She started yelling about all my containers, about the microwave hogging, about how she has to clean up after me all the time. She called me inconsiderate and lazy. I was just sitting there, honestly, just shocked. I’ve never had someone yell at me like that at work. I just don’t think I’m doing anything wrong. Everyone leaves stuff sometimes. Everyone splatters. It’s just how it goes. Some people are just way too uptight about everything.

Now she’s giving me the silent treatment, and other people are looking at me weird. I think Brenda went and told some people her side of the story, making me out to be some kind of monster. But I’m just trying to live my life, eat my lunch, and not stress about every little thing. I clean up when I have time, and if something gets left in the fridge, it’s not the end of the world. It’s a shared space, not her private kitchen.

Am I The Jerk? I really don’t think so. I think Brenda is just way too much, and she needs to chill out. Tell me I’m not crazy here. It’s just food and a microwave, not a big deal.
