I just had the biggest blowout with my mom and I’m still shaking. My hands are literally trembling trying to type this out so if there’s typos just bare with me. I need to know if I’m losing my mind here or if she’s being completely unreasonable.
So, background. I live in a pretty small city apartment. It’s a one-bedroom. Not even a big one. The living room is just big enough for a couch, a tiny coffee table, and my TV. My bedroom is where I have my desk set up because I work from home a good three days a week, and the other two I’m commuting into the office which takes a while. My life is busy. I like my space. I like my routine. It’s not a lot, but it’s mine and I worked really hard to get here.
My mom lives a couple of states away, in a much smaller town. She’s been talking for months about how she wants to “experience city life” and how she feels like she’s “missing out.” Which, fine, great. I even encouraged her to visit! I said, “Mom, come for a long weekend! Come for a week! We’ll do touristy things, I’ll take time off work, it’ll be fun.” I was genuinely excited about the idea of her visiting, having some quality time, showing her around my world.
But that’s not what she wants. Oh no. She wants to come for “a few months.” Not a week. Not two. A few. As in, two to three. Maybe four. She keeps being vague about the exact timeline but it’s clear she’s thinking long-term. She just dropped this bomb on me last week like it was a done deal. “I’ve decided I’m going to come stay with you for a bit this spring,” she said, like she was announcing what she’d have for dinner.
I was floored. I tried to be nice about it at first. I reminded her about my apartment size. “Mom, you know I only have one bedroom. My desk is in there. Where would you even sleep for months?”
“Oh, I can take the couch!” she chirped. “I’m not picky. And you can still use your bedroom for your work, it’ll be fine.”
That’s where I started to feel my blood pressure rise. Fine for her, maybe. But it wouldn’t be fine for me. My couch is not a comfortable long-term sleeping solution. It’s a cheap futon, really. And the idea of having someone in my living room, all the time, for months, when I’m trying to work or just relax after a long day? It sounds like a nightmare. I need my privacy. I need my quiet. I’m an introvert. My home is my sanctuary.
I tried to explain this to her. I said, “Mom, I love you, but my apartment isn’t set up for long-term guests. Especially not for months. What about your house? What would you do about your bills, your mail, your pets?” She said she’d “figure it out” and that her freind could check on things. This whole plan just felt so ill-conceived and selfish.
I suggested other options. I found a really cute Airbnb down the street that was actually quite affordable for a month. I offered to help pay for part of it. I said, “You could stay there, and then you’d have your own space, your own kitchen, and we could still see each other every day! We could have dinner, go out, you could hang out at my place whenever you want, but then you’d have somewhere comfortable to go back to.” I even offered to cover a big chunk of the cost myself, thinking that would smooth things over.
She absolutely refused. Said it was “insulting” that I’d suggest she stay somewhere else. “Don’t you want your own mother to stay with you?” she wailed. “I thought you loved me! I raised you! This is how you treat me?” She went on about how family should support each other, and how she always welcomed me home when I needed it. Which, yes, she did. But I was her child, needing a place to stay after college, not an adult parent wanting a free vacation in my tiny apartment for a quarter of a year. It’s not the same thing!
The argument got really heated. I ended up saying that if she came, she couldn’t stay for more than two weeks, maximum. And that I would expect her to help out with groceries and cooking, and be mindful of my work schedule. I told her that my home wasn’t a hotel and that I wasn’t just going to put my life on hold and give up my space indefinitely. I told her I couldn’t afford to have her here long term, emotionally or financially. She hung up on me.
Now she’s telling my siblings that I’m being a terrible, ungrateful child, that I’ve abandoned her, and that I’m “too good” for my family now that I live in the city. My brother called me, saying I was being harsh and that “it’s just mom, you know how she is.” But I’m not “just mom”-ing it anymore. This is my life. My sanity. My space. And I feel like I’m setting a very reasonable boundary here. She’s pushing it way too far.
Am I the jerk for not letting my mom move into my one-bedroom apartment for months on end when I offered her other, comfortable, private options that I even offered to help pay for? Please tell me I’m not crazy here.
