Hello everyone. I come here because I am so confused and upset. My wife, Sarah, she is saying I am being unreasonable, but I think my mother-in-law, Mrs. Gable, she is the one who is being difficult. I need to know if I am seeing this clearly or if I am in the wrong here.
So, Sarah and I, we have been married for five years. We are very happy. We have a small house, very nice. Sarah’s mother, she lives by herself in a big house, too big for her now. Her husband passed away some years ago. She is retired, has plenty of money, but she is always complaining about how lonely she is. Sarah feels very guilty about this, and she visits her mother almost every weekend. This is okay, I understand. Family is important.
The problem is with the house. It is old, a bit rundown, and Sarah’s mother, she cannot manage the garden anymore. It is overgrown. Also, the house needs repairs. Small things, like a leaky faucet, a door that sticks, painting. Sarah, she worries about her mother living alone in a big, old house. She wants her to move closer to us, maybe into an apartment in our town. But Mrs. Gable, she refuses. She says she has lived in that house for forty years, it is her home, she loves her garden. She says she will not be put in a “little box”.
So, Sarah is stressed. She asks me, “Can we help? Can we do some work on the house for my mother?” I am a handy person. I like fixing things. I said, “Yes, of course. We can help. I can fix the faucet, paint the living room, maybe tidy up the garden a bit.” Sarah was so happy. She told her mother, and Mrs. Gable was very pleased. She said, “Oh, that would be wonderful! My son-in-law is so talented!”
We went there last Saturday. Sarah brought lunch. I brought my tools. Mrs. Gable, she was very excited. She showed me the leaky faucet. She showed me the peeling paint. She showed me the garden that is like a jungle. I said, “Okay, Mrs. Gable, I will start with the faucet. It is the most urgent.” She said, “Oh, thank you, dear! You are a lifesaver.”
So, I started working. It was not a big job, maybe an hour. While I was working, Sarah and her mother were in the kitchen, talking and laughing. They seemed happy. After I fixed the faucet, I went to the living room to start the painting. Mrs. Gable gave me the paint color. It was a very light, almost white color. I said, “Are you sure? It is very… light.” She said, “Yes, yes, it will make the room feel so much bigger and brighter.” Okay, I thought. It is her house.
I started painting. It was hard work, but I was happy to help. Sarah came in sometimes to see how I was doing. She seemed happy too. She said, “You are doing so great! Mom is so happy.” Around lunchtime, Mrs. Gable called us to eat. We ate, and then I went back to work. I wanted to finish the living room. I also wanted to look at the garden. It was really a mess. I thought, maybe I can cut back some of the bushes, clear the weeds. Make it look better.
When I finished painting the living room, it looked… okay. Very white. Maybe too white. But it was done. I then went outside to the garden. I have some good shears and a small chainsaw. I started cutting back the overgrown bushes. I cleared a big patch of weeds. I was trying to make it look neat and tidy. I was working hard for maybe two hours. It was getting dark.
Sarah came out and she looked horrified. She said, “What are you doing?!” I said, “I am cleaning up the garden, like we talked about.” She said, “But you are cutting everything down! That was her prize rose bush! And those are the hydrangeas!” I said, “They were completely overgrown. I was trying to make it look presentable.”
Then Mrs. Gable came out. She saw the garden. Her face went pale. She started to cry. She said, “My roses! My hydrangeas! What have you done?” I tried to explain, “Mrs. Gable, they were very messy. I was just trying to help make it look better for you.” She said, “Better? You have destroyed my garden! Those were special plants! My husband planted those roses!”
Sarah was very angry with me. She told her mother, “I am so sorry, Mom. He didn’t understand.” Mrs. Gable was crying and saying, “He doesn’t understand anything! He is a destructive man!” Sarah told me, “We need to go. Now.” She helped her mother inside. I was left standing in the dark, feeling confused and hurt. I was trying to help!
Later that night, in the car, Sarah was yelling at me. She said I was selfish and I did not listen. She said I just went in and destroyed everything without asking. I said, “I was helping! You asked me to help with the house and the garden! It was a mess!” She said, “You were supposed to fix things, not ruin them! You don’t know anything about gardening!”
I told her, “Well, maybe if you had told me which plants were special, I would not have touched them. But everything looked like weeds!” She said I was completely out of line. She said I have ruined her mother’s weekend and made her very upset. She said I am not welcome at her mother’s house anymore.
I feel like I was trying to do a good deed. I used my skills to help fix things. The painting looks fine. The faucet works. The garden, yes, maybe I cut too much, but it was overgrown! It looked bad. Mrs. Gable is being overly dramatic. She is always complaining, and now she has a reason to complain about me. Sarah is siding with her mother, as usual.
I just wanted to help my wife’s family. I spent my Saturday doing manual labor. I was not paid. I did it out of kindness. And now I am the bad guy. I feel unappreciated and attacked. Was I really that wrong? I thought I was being a good husband and a good helper. Why is everyone so angry?
Am I The Jerk here? Please tell me the truth. I am willing to listen to reason, but I feel like Sarah and her mother are being very unfair to me. I just wanted to make things better for them. Is that so bad? I am asking you to please be honest with me, because I am really struggling to understand this situation. I need to know if I was wrong.
