Am I the Jerk for prioritizing my apartment down payment over my mom’s house repairs?

Hello everyone. I come here because I am so confused and upset, and I need to know if what I did was wrong. My mother is very angry with me, and I don’t understand why she cannot see my side. It feels like she thinks I am not caring, but I worked so hard for my future.

For many years now, I have been saving money. Every month, I put a part of my salary away. This money was for one thing: a down payment for my own apartment. Where I live, the rent is very high, and I share a small place with roommates. It is not comfortable, and I dream to have my own space, a place to call truly mine. I am now in my late twenties, and this goal has been my main focus. I have denied myself many things – no big trips, no fancy clothes, always cooking at home instead of eating out. It was hard, but I was so close. I had almost enough for a small apartment, something humble but mine.

Then, my mother called me. She lives in the old family house. It is a very big house, too big for one person, and it is very old. For years, I told her, “Mother, maybe you should sell this house. It is too much for you to manage. It has so many problems, and it costs so much to fix.” But she always said no. “This is our family home,” she would say. “Your father built this with his own hands. I will never sell it.”

Recently, the roof began to leak very badly. It was not a small leak. Water was coming inside, damaging the ceiling, and even a wall. My mother was very upset. She called many contractors, and the quotes were very high. Higher than she expected. Much higher than she had in her savings.

So, she called me. She said, “My child, I need your help. The roof is very bad. I have some money, but not enough. I need your down payment money. You have so much saved. You can wait a little longer for your apartment. This house, it is for all of us, it is our history.”

I was shocked. I told her, “Mother, this is my future. I worked for this for so long. And the house, it is too big. Why do you not sell it and buy a smaller place, a new one that needs no repairs? Then you will have money left over, and no problems.”

She got very angry. “How can you say this? This is my home! Your father’s home! You are selfish! You think only of yourself! I raised you, I gave you everything, and now when I need you, you say no?”

I tried to explain. I said, “Mother, I can help you, but not with all the money. I can give you a part, maybe enough to stop the worst of the leak for now, to make a temporary fix. But my down payment, this is for my stability. If I give it all, I will be back to zero. It will take me years more to save again. Years more in this small room with roommates. It is not fair to ask me to give up my dream for something you refuse to fix in a different way.”

She said, “So you choose a wall over your mother? You choose a roof over your family? I don’t want a temporary fix! I want it done right! And you have the money!”

We argued for a long time. She said I was ungrateful. She said I owed her. I said I love her, and I help her often with other things, with errands, with her garden, with bringing her groceries. But this money, it is different. It is my freedom. It is my future home. I told her that maybe she should talk to my siblings too. I am not the only child.

She said my siblings “are not as stable” as I am, and she knows I have the money. It felt like she was saying, “You are the one who saved, so you pay.”

In the end, I did not give her all the money. I gave her about one-fifth of what I saved. It was still a lot for me, a significant part. I told her this could pay for the emergency repairs and she should consider what I said about selling the house or finding another solution for the bigger repair. She took the money, but she did not say thank you. She just said, “This is not enough.” And she has not spoken to me properly since. When I call, she is cold. When I visit, she speaks only a few words. My siblings are also acting a bit strange with me now, like I did something very bad.

I feel like I am in a trap. I want to help my mother, but I also need to live my own life. Is it wrong to protect my future? Is it wrong to say no to my parent when they ask for something so big, especially when I see other ways they could solve their problem? I feel so alone in this.

Am I The Jerk? Please, tell me truly what you think. I need to understand if my thinking is wrong here.
