Me and my wife, Sarah, we got into a real big fight this weekend, and I just don’t get why she’s so mad. She’s acting like I’m the worst person ever, and honestly, I think I’m being pretty fair about the whole thing. I just need some outside people to tell me if I’m crazy or if she’s being a bit much.
So, here’s the deal. Sarah works two jobs. One is full-time at an office, and then she does some evening shifts at a restaurant a few nights a week. She says she’s always tired, which, I mean, I get it. Two jobs is a lot. But she chose to do it, you know? Nobody forced her. My job is more of a regular 9-to-5, pretty chill, not super stressful. I make enough to cover my half of the bills and still have some spending money, which is good. We split everything down the middle, always have.
The house, well, it’s not huge. It’s a two-bedroom, one-bathroom place. We both try to keep it clean, but lately, Sarah’s been complaining a lot. She says she’s too exhausted to do her share of the chores. She’ll come home from her second job looking worn out, and sometimes the dishes are still in the sink from dinner, or the living room is a bit messy. I always clean up after myself, though. I make sure my stuff is put away. If I use a dish, I rinse it and put it in the dishwasher. If the dishwasher is full, I’ll run it. I do my part.
Last week, she comes to me, all serious, and says she wants to hire a cleaning service. Like, a professional one, to come once a week and do the whole house. She said it would take a huge load off her, and she could actually relax on her days off instead of catching up on housework. She even looked up prices and everything. She said it would be about $150 a week, or $600 a month.
I just looked at her. “$600 a month?” I asked. “Are you kidding me? That’s insane.”
She got defensive right away. Said it was worth it for her sanity, and we could afford it if we just adjusted our budget a little. That’s when I put my foot down. I told her, “Look, Sarah. I already do my part. I clean up after myself. The house isn’t even that dirty. We don’t need to pay someone $600 a month to do what we can do ourselves for free.”
She said, “I can’t do it myself, though! I work 60 hours a week! When am I supposed to scrub the bathroom or mop the floors? I barely have time to sleep!”
And I said, “Well, maybe if you didn’t work two jobs, you’d have more time. Or maybe you just need to manage your time better. I manage to keep my stuff clean. It’s not rocket science.”
That’s when she really blew up. She started yelling about how I don’t appreciate her, and how I expect her to do all the housework just because I work an easier job. Which isn’t fair! I do plenty around the house. I take out the trash, I change the light bulbs, I even mow the lawn sometimes. Those are big jobs! Way bigger than just wiping down a counter or vacuuming the living room once a week. I mean, those little chores only take like, an hour or two on a Saturday. She’s just exaggerating how much work it is.
She said if I wasn’t going to pay my half, then we weren’t getting a cleaning service at all, and that I was being completely selfish. She even said she feels like she’s living with a roommate, not a husband, because I’m so unwilling to help out with something that would make her life easier. Which is just mean to say! I’m her husband, and I do plenty. I just don’t think it’s smart to throw away $600 every month on something we can easily do ourselves.
The whole thing ended with her going to stay at her sister’s house, and she’s barely talking to me. She keeps saying I’m not being a team player, and that I’m being cheap and uncaring. But I’m just being practical. We work hard for our money. Why should we waste it on something that’s not even necessary? I’m just trying to be responsible with our finances, and she’s acting like I’m a monster.
I feel like I’m being reasonable. I keep my stuff clean, I do my share of the bigger outdoor chores. If she’s too tired to do the inside stuff, that’s her choice to work so much. I don’t see why I should have to pay for her choices. Am I really the jerk here? Or is she just overreacting and trying to make me feel bad for wanting to save our money?
