So this happened just yesterday and I’m still kinda bothered by it, mostly cause I feel like I was just doing what anyone would do, but this lady acted like I was the worst person in the world. I need some outside opinions here, cause I don’t get what I did wrong.
I was at the big grocery store, the one with all the good deals on cereal. It was Sunday afternoon, so you know it was packed. Every single checkout line had a bunch of people. I had a full cart, probably like three hundred dollars worth of groceries. My kids eat a lot, what can I say? I waited my turn in a line, probably for a good ten minutes, slowly moving forward with my big old cart. I wasn’t rushing, wasn’t complaining, just waiting my turn like everyone else.
Finally, I get to be maybe three carts back from the cashier. I’m thinking, okay, almost there. Then this lady walks up behind me. She’s got one of those little hand baskets, not even a full cart. And in her basket, she has exactly one thing. It was a bag of chips, like the big family size ones. Just a single bag of chips. She didn’t even look like she had been waiting. She just walked up and stood right behind me.
I didn’t think nothing of it at first. People buy one thing all the time. But then she kinda leaned forward, not like she was trying to get past me, but more like she was trying to get my attention. So I looked at her. She smiled, one of those kinda fake-y smiles, and she says, “Excuse me, would you mind if I just jumped in front of you? I just have this one item.”
Now, I know some people do that. They let folks with one or two things go ahead. But I had been waiting, like I said, a good ten minutes already. And I had a full cart. It was heavy. I was tired. I just wanted to get my stuff checked out and go home. And frankly, if I let her go, what if the person behind her had two things? Then that person would ask too? Where does it stop? It’s a line, right? You wait your turn. That’s how lines work.
So I just looked at her, and I said, “Nope, sorry. I’ve been waiting a long time too. You gotta wait your turn like everyone else.” I said it real polite, not mean or nothing. Just a statement of fact.
Her smile dropped, like, instantly. Her face got all red. She actually scoffed at me. She said, “Are you serious? It’s one bag of chips! It would take two seconds!”
I just shrugged. “Doesn’t matter if it’s one thing or ten. We all gotta wait.”
She then started muttering stuff under her breath. I heard her say “unbelievable” and “some people are so inconsiderate.” I pretended not to hear her, cause I didn’t want to make a big scene. But it was definitely loud enough for me to hear and for the lady in front of me to turn around and give a weird look. The cashier was busy scanning stuff for the person at the front, so she didn’t seem to notice nothing.
When it was finally my turn, and I was putting all my stuff on the conveyor belt, she was still standing behind me, huffing and puffing. She even pushed her little basket forward and kinda bumped my cart, which I thought was a real rude thing to do. She didn’t say nothing, but it was like she was trying to make a point.
I just paid for my groceries and ignored her. But the whole drive home, I kept thinking about it. Why was she so mad? I didn’t do nothing wrong. It’s a line. You wait. End of story. I was there first. My time is just as important as her time, even if she only had one item. Everyone needs to follow the rules, right?
My sister says I should have just let her go, that it’s just common courtesy. But I think common courtesy means not asking someone to give up their spot when they’ve been waiting just as long. What do you all think?

I really need to know if I was wrong here. I feel like I was totally in the right, just standing up for myself and the idea of fairness. Tell me what you honestly think, but don’t hold back if you think I messed up. I just want the truth.
