Hello everyone. I come here for advice because I am very confused about situation with my wife. I do not know if I am acting unfairly or if she is being unreasonable. Please read and tell me truth.
My wife, let us call her Anya, and I have been married for five years. We have good life, generally. We both work hard, have nice home, and love each other. But there is one thing that always cause friction. It is her mother. Anya’s mother, who we call Elena, lives in another country. She visit us maybe twice a year for a few weeks at time. Each time she visit, it is like living in different house. Elena is very… particular. She likes things done her way. She rearrange my kitchen, she tells Anya how to cook, she criticize my cleaning. This is already difficult, but she also has habit of bringing many, many gifts for us. Not just for us, but for our home. And these gifts are always… strange. She brings decorative plates that do not match anything we own. She brings figurines of animals that are frankly, a bit creepy. She brings blankets with very loud patterns. She says these are gifts to make our home beautiful and show her love.
I try to be polite. I say thank you. But Anya, she tries so hard to please her mother. She will put up the plates, even though I hate them and they clash with everything. She will display the figurines, even though they give me nightmares. She says, “She is my mother, she is trying to help. You should be more appreciative.” I try to explain to her that I appreciate her mother’s love, but I do not appreciate her mother taking over our home and filling it with things we do not want.
This last visit was worst. Elena brought so many things. She brought a large, ugly vase that she insisted we put on our dining room table. She brought a set of embroidered pillows that are so itchy, no one can sit on them. She even brought a life-sized statue of a cat, which she placed in our hallway. I told Anya, “This is too much. Our house is becoming a museum of things we do not like. We cannot live like this.” Anya got very upset. She said, “It is her way of showing love. You are making her feel unwelcome.”
I could not stand it anymore. One evening, after Elena had gone to bed, I took the ugly vase and smashed it in the backyard. I took the itchy pillows and threw them in the trash. I took the creepy cat statue and put it in the garage, under a tarp. I did not want Anya to see what I did immediately. I wanted to see Elena’s reaction in the morning. I wanted her to see that her gifts were not wanted.
The next morning, Elena was very upset. She cried and asked Anya where her gifts were. Anya, of course, looked at me. I could not lie. I admitted that I broke and threw away the gifts. I told Elena, “Your gifts are not suitable for our home. We appreciate your thought, but we do not like these things.” Elena was horrified. She said I was disrespectful and ungrateful. Anya was furious with me. She yelled at me and told me I ruined everything. She said I was deliberately trying to hurt her mother.
Now Anya is barely speaking to me. She says I have no respect for her family and that I am selfish. She is considering telling her mother not to visit anymore, which would also upset Elena greatly. I feel that I was in my right. Our home is our space, and we should not be forced to fill it with things we dislike, especially when they are given with the implied expectation that we will display them and be grateful for them. It feels like a passive-aggressive way of controlling our living space. I tried to be subtle at first, but Anya would not listen to my feelings. I had to take action. I feel like I did what was necessary to reclaim our home. Anya says I am being malicious. I do not think I am malicious. I just want to live in a home that reflects us, not someone else’s taste. She says I deliberately waited until her mother was here to cause maximum upset. That is true, but I felt that if I waited until her mother left, nothing would change for the next visit. It had to be a clear message.
So, I ask you, the internet. Am I The Jerk? Was I Wrong? I believe I was just trying to set boundaries and make my feelings known in a way that could not be ignored. Anya thinks I deliberately wanted to cause maximum offense and distress, and that I succeeded. Please tell me the truth. I need to know if I went too far or if I was justified in my actions. I am hoping you will tell me that I was right to stand up for myself and my home. I feel like I was forced into this action by Anya’s inability to address the issue directly with her mother.
