Okay, so I gotta tell you guys about this, because honestly, I’m kinda stumped on why my neighbor is so mad. I really thought I was doing the right thing, or at least, the only thing left to do. You tell me what you think.
My wife and I, we’ve lived in our house for going on fifteen years now. We take care of our yard, you know? We mow the lawn, trim the bushes, keep things looking nice. It’s important to us, not just for our own house but for the whole street. Makes the neighborhood look good, keeps property values up. Everyone wins when people take pride in their place.
About maybe six months ago, new folks moved in next door. A young couple, seemed nice enough at first. We waved, said hello, offered to help if they needed anything. They seemed a bit quiet, but that’s fine, everyone’s different. The problem started pretty much right away with their yard. They had this huge, really old rose bush that was already kind of wild when they moved in. It was right along our shared fence line, probably there for decades. I figured, okay, new people, they’re busy moving in, they’ll get around to it. But they never did.
This rose bush, it wasn’t just a little bit overgrown. It was like a monster. Thorns everywhere, branches just sprawling all over the place. And the biggest problem was, it was growing right over our fence. Like, a good three or four feet onto my side, practically over my driveway. Every time I’d pull my truck in or out, I’d hear those thorns scraping along the side. I got a couple of small scratches on my paint already from it. And it dropped leaves and petals all over my driveway and flower beds, which meant I was constantly sweeping their mess up. It wasn’t just an eyesore, it was a real nuisance and causing damage.
So, after about two months, I decided I should say something. I waited until I saw the guy outside one Saturday morning, just putting out his trash. I walked over, nice as anything, and said, “Hey, neighbor, just wanted to mention that big rose bush. It’s really spreading onto my side, scratching my truck. Would you mind trimming it back a bit?” He just kind of looked at me, mumbled something like, “Oh, yeah, we’ll get to it,” and that was that. I thought, okay, he got the message. He’ll do it.
Well, another month went by. Then another. The bush just kept getting bigger, wilder. More thorns, more scraping, more mess. It was getting ridiculous. My wife was getting annoyed too, saying she was tired of sweeping up their rose petals every day. And the scratches on the truck were really starting to bother me. I figured, I asked nicely. I waited patiently. They clearly weren’t going to do anything about it. So, I decided I had to take matters into my own hands.
Last Saturday morning, I got my heavy-duty loppers and my pruning saw. I went out there, and I started trimming. I only cut what was on my side of the fence, technically. But I didn’t just trim it back to the fence line. I mean, what’s the point of that? It would just grow back in a couple of weeks. So I went back about another foot or so into their yard, just to make sure it wouldn’t be a problem for a while. I cut off all the thorny branches that were hanging over my driveway and all the stuff that was dropping leaves into my beds. I cleaned it up good. To me, it looked a lot neater, and it wasn’t going to scratch my truck anymore. I even stacked the cut branches neatly by their side of the fence, figuring they could just toss them out with their yard waste.
I thought I’d done them a favor, honestly. I’d cleaned up their messy bush, saved them the trouble. But then, about an hour later, the neighbor guy came storming out of his house. He was red in the face, yelling. “What did you do to my rose bush?!” he shouted. “You cut it way too far! You were on my property! That was a heritage rose!” He was going on and on about how I’d ruined it, how it wouldn’t grow back right, how it was trespassing. My wife heard him and came out, and she tried to calm him down, but he was just furious. I tried to explain that it was scratching my truck and I’d asked him to trim it, but he just kept saying I had no right to go onto his property, even for a foot. He said he was going to report me for property damage and trespassing.
I just don’t get it. I asked him nicely. I waited for months. His bush was causing actual damage to my vehicle and making a mess of my property. I only went a little bit onto his side to make sure the problem was actually solved, not just for a week. And it looks better now, honestly. It doesn’t even look dead, just trimmed. He never even touched it himself! Now he’s acting like I’m some kind of criminal. My wife thinks maybe I went too far by cutting that extra foot, but I truly believe I was just protecting my own property and doing what needed to be done since he wouldn’t. Plus, it’s not like I chopped down the whole thing. It’s still there, just smaller. A lot smaller.
Was I Wrong? Tell me straight. I just want to know if I’m missing something here, or if this guy is just overreacting to me taking care of a problem he created and ignored.
