Am I the Jerk for trimming my neighbor’s overhanging tree after they refused to address its mess?

Okay, so I just need to get this off my chest because I am seeing red right now and my neighbor is absolutely out of their mind. I need some objective opinions because I feel like I am going crazy here.

I live in a really nice area, spent a lot of money on my house, and I take a lot of pride in my yard. Like, a lot. I’m out there every weekend, mowing, edging, planting, making sure everything looks perfect. It’s my sanctuary, you know? My neighbor, let’s call them “Pat,” lives next door, and they have this massive, ancient maple tree. It’s a beautiful tree, I’ll admit, but it’s probably 70 feet tall and easily half of its canopy extends over my property. And I mean over my patio, over my driveway, over my flowerbeds, even brushing against my roof.

For years, this tree has been a nightmare. In the spring, it drops millions of those little helicopter seeds everywhere. They get in the gutters, they clog up the pool skimmer, they sprout everywhere in my lawn. Then summer comes, and it’s sap. Sticky, horrible sap all over my car, all over the patio furniture, all over the concrete. You can’t sit outside without getting sticky, and washing the car is pointless because it’s covered again within a day. And then, fall. Oh, the fall. Thousands upon thousands of huge maple leaves. My yard is always the last to be cleared because the tree just keeps dropping them, even after Pat’s side is clear. My gutters are always packed full, causing water to spill over. I’ve had to replace parts of my gutter system twice because of the constant blockages and weight.

I’ve tried to be reasonable. Truly. I’ve approached Pat multiple times over the past three years. The first time, I just politely mentioned the sap and asked if they ever considered trimming the branches that were right over my driveway. Pat just smiled and said, “Oh, it’s just nature!” and laughed it off. No offer, no nothing. A few months later, after another huge gutter cleanout, I mentioned it again, this time pointing out the damage to my gutters. Pat said they “didn’t have the money for an arborist right now” and suggested I just get a better leaf blower. A leaf blower for sap, really?

Last year, I even offered to pay for half the cost of a professional arborist to come and trim back the offending branches, just the ones on my side. I figured, it’s a shared problem, I’ll put my money where my mouth is. Pat looked at me like I’d suggested we pave their yard. They said, “That tree provides me with excellent shade. I don’t want it touched. It’s been there longer than both of us.” And that was that. End of discussion, apparently.

I did my research. I know my rights. In our state, any part of a neighbor’s tree that overhangs your property is legally yours to trim, as long as you do it responsibly and don’t intentionally harm the tree. I wasn’t trying to kill their tree, I just wanted my property back. I wanted to use my patio without getting sticky. I wanted to park my car without it being covered in sap. I wanted my gutters to work properly.

So, a few weeks ago, I had enough. I hired a certified arborist, a really good one, explained the situation. I told him to cut back everything that was on my side of the property line, but to do it properly, making clean cuts, so it wouldn’t hurt the tree. He came out last Thursday and did the work. It took him a whole day, it was extensive because so much of that tree was over my property, but when he was done, my yard was finally free! No more branches over my driveway, no more hanging over the patio. It looked so much better, so clean, so open. I paid a significant amount for this, mind you, entirely out of my own pocket.

Well, Pat came home from work that day. And oh boy. The screaming started almost immediately. Pat came storming over to my house, red-faced, practically spitting. “WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO MY TREE?!” they yelled. “YOU’VE BUTCHERED IT! IT LOOKS HORRIBLE! YOU’VE KILLED IT!”

I calmly explained that I had every right to trim the parts of the tree that were on my property, that I had tried to talk to them multiple times, and that I even offered to pay for it. I told them I hired a professional and it was done correctly. Pat just kept yelling, saying I had destroyed their property, that I was a horrible neighbor, that they were going to call the HOA, that they were going to sue me for damages to their “heritage tree.” They even said the tree now looked “lopsided” from their side and that I had ruined the aesthetic of their yard.

Seriously? I gave them years of chances. I offered to pay. I did everything by the book. I just wanted to enjoy my own home and not have to deal with their tree’s constant mess and potential damage. They literally forced my hand. Now they’re acting like I committed a crime.

Am I The Jerk? Was I wrong to finally take action after they completely refused to address the issue for years? I genuinely feel like I did what anyone would do in my situation, and that Pat is being completely unreasonable and entitled. Please tell me what you think, I need to know if I’m somehow missing something here.
