I was at the daycare, just waiting for my kid. It was end of day. Lots of parents were coming and going. I was standing near the cubbies, close to where the kids get their things. I felt calm, thinking about going home.
Then this lady came up. She had a bag, a big one, over her shoulder. She looked around, then she looked right at me. She walked very fast. She was like, “Finally, someone is here! I have been waiting and waiting.”
I blinked. I was confused. I did not work there. I just looked at her, then I looked past her to the reception desk. There was a real employee there, but the lady did not seem to see her.
She said, “You, yes, you. I need help. I cannot find the SuperSoft Organics hypoallergenic baby wipes. They are always in stock. Where did you move them?” Her voice was getting louder. My head started to throb a little. I did not like this.
I said, “Oh, I do not work here. I am just a parent, like you. My child is in the Dolphin Room.” I tried to be nice. I pointed to the actual employee who was helping another parent sign out their child. She was wearing a uniform shirt with the daycare logo on it.
The lady just stared at me. Her mouth made a straight line. She said, “Do not be silly. I know you work here. You are always in this area. Just tell me where the wipes are. My baby needs them. This is very important. I do not have time for games.” She put her hands on her hips. I felt a surge of irritation.
I tried again. “No, really. I do not work at this place. I am here to pick up my child, Max. You should ask the lady at the desk. She can help you find things.” I took a small step away from her, trying to move towards the door where the children would come out.
But she stepped in front of me. She blocked my way. “Do not walk away from me! This is terrible service! I am a paying customer. I need these wipes now. Are you new? Is that it? Are you too new to know where the stock is kept?” She looked very serious. My shoulders tensed. This was not okay.
I felt a deep sigh escape me. This was going nowhere. “I told you. I am not an employee. I cannot help you. I have no idea where the wipes are. Please, let me pass.” I tried to walk around her, but she moved with me, always keeping herself between me and the main hallway.
She put her hands out, like she was stopping me physically. “You are being rude! I will report you. I will tell your manager you refused to help a customer. You will be in big trouble! Just tell me. Is it in the back storage room? Or did you move them to the special needs section?”
I started to feel very angry. My jaw felt tight. “I am not an employee! I cannot be ‘reported’ to anyone here. You need to talk to a real worker.” My voice was a bit louder now. I just wanted to escape this conversation. I could see some other parents looking our way, quickly looking away again.
She ignored me. “This is completely unacceptable! Where are they? You must know! You are dressed like you work here!” I looked down at my simple shirt and pants. There was nothing uniform-like about my clothes. I shook my head slowly. I felt a headache beginning to form behind my eyes.
I saw Max’s teacher coming out from the back, bringing a line of children. I saw Max. I started to walk towards him. I thought maybe I could just grab him and leave. This woman was crazy. I needed to get away from her.
But she followed me. She grabbed my arm, not hard, but enough to surprise me. “Do not think you can escape me! You will help me find those wipes! My baby’s bottom is sensitive, and I need that specific brand. This is your job!” Her grip made my arm feel hot. My chest felt tight with frustration.
I pulled my arm away. “Do not touch me! I do not work here! Leave me alone!” I was seeing red. I reached Max and quickly took his hand. He looked up at me, sensing the tension. I bent down and whispered quickly, “We need to go, sweetie.”
The lady started shouting then. “She is refusing to help me! She is being abusive! She should be fired! This is how you treat customers? I cannot believe it!” She was making a huge scene. All the children were looking. Max started to look scared.
Max’s teacher, a kind lady named Ms. Chen, came over quickly. “Is everything alright here?” she asked, her voice calm but firm. She looked from me to the screaming woman.
The woman pointed a finger at me. “No, it is not! This employee, she is refusing to help me find the wipes. She even tried to run away from me! She should not work here! She is a terrible person!”
Ms. Chen looked at me, then back at the lady. “Ma’am, she is not an employee here. This is Max’s mother. She is a parent picking up her child.”
The lady gasped. Her face changed. But then she just got more angry. “That is a lie! She looks like an employee! She acted like an employee! She was hiding the wipes from me! You are all in on it!” She started to shout about how terrible the daycare was, how they hired rude people, how she would tell everyone.
Ms. Chen shook her head. She pulled out a small radio from her pocket. “I am going to have to call for management to assist you. Please calm down.”
The lady just screamed more. “I will not calm down! This is outrageous! I want her fired! And you too! I want those wipes!” She was pacing now, yelling at everyone and no one. Her voice was harsh and loud. Max was clinging to my leg, hiding his face.
A few minutes later, the director came out. She was very serious. The lady kept yelling at her, saying I was a bad employee, that Ms. Chen was also bad. The director listened for a moment, then she said very clearly, “Ma’am, you need to either calm down and discuss this issue respectfully, or you need to leave. This is a daycare, and you are frightening the children.”
The lady just got louder. She started saying how she would call the police on me. She said I assaulted her by pulling my arm away. My heart felt like it was hammering. I was so angry, but I just held Max tighter. I knew I needed to stay calm for him.
The director did not hesitate. She called someone on her phone. I heard her say, “Yes, we have an uncooperative person disturbing the peace. We need assistance.”
It was not long before security arrived. Two big men in dark uniforms. The lady was still yelling. They tried to talk to her, but she just turned her anger on them. She kept pointing at me and saying I was the problem. But the security guards were firm. They told her she needed to leave the building immediately.
She refused. She said she was not leaving until I was fired and she got her wipes. They told her she had no choice. She struggled a bit, but they escorted her out of the daycare. I saw them talking to her outside for a long time. I just wanted to go home and forget it all.
